Tri-Void Chair_ Michael Houck

The Tri-Void Chair, is a working and
dining chair using folded cardboard
panels to create triangular voids that allow compact ability.

By scoring and folding the cardboard, it’s easily compact and lightweight which suits small spaces. The chair is also able to be stored and shipped at a low cost.

Testing different manipulation techniques with the cardboard, lead to the decision of using the folding technique to gain strength.

Study models were created to help better understand the structural support and the global form.

Double corrugated cardboard was best suited for this design because the folded panels allowed for local stiffness in areas of deflection.

After establishing the local issues, 3D models and dimensional drawings establish the chair’s compact ability and visual mass.

Goals:

Economical
Ship-able
Compact
