The Cellular Chair
The construction of honeycomb inspired the foundation of cellular chair, which was a combination of multiple units can distribute a large area of heavy loads into each individual unit.
The cellular chair simulates its working theory, but it also has features that the honeycomb doesn’t have. That is its different parts can be split and either remove or switch with other components. For example, as the picture shows here conveys an idea of switching between having the feet rested on the ground and having the feet rested on the ottoman. And depending on how different the customers’ body size are we can also altered the specification of different modular units.
Speaking of the precedent, Circus modular sofa has the concept of what I gave to the cellular chair. In the picture, the sofa encourage activities like chatting, while the master of the apartment can sit on the single unit and the group of visiting guests sit on another larger unit, and the way two units are facing in a diagonal line, people can see each others face while talking. And when they want to see a movie together, they line up the sofa. When they want to form a bed they can just add one more square unit into the center. So it’s all about being flexible for multi-tasks.
And the other two precedents are more into technical solution. One is the tabing technique i learned from one component came from Dell packing box.
The other one is the Drawer slide, this is an application i think everyone could recognized, it is so ubiquitous because almost every drawers is using this technique to offer the ability to move back and forth and prevent further movement from right to left or left to right.
And then it was the economical cost. There is an idea that can increase more revenue base on the traits that this chair can be sell in different sections of units. Little pockets or shelves can be introduced as an additional components for the customers.
Besides sliding for connection there was also alternative connection for each modular section —- Velcro tape.
They can be stick to the wall with any way of organization.
The very first prototype was constructed in a way that the triangular structure was laid with flute parallel to the floor causing parts to be deflected.
Then it comes the second prototype where there is a plane surface of cardboard warping around the extrusion of cellular unit, serves the function of “cushion”. However, this plane surface was later on considered as a unnecessary parts that hindered the more efficient way of expressing concept. So it was cut out later in the project.
